More than a million men and women have laser hair removal procedures every single year, however those with darker skin tones have often not been able to due to lack of technology. For years they’ve been discouraged from using this fast growing procedure, however that time is now long gone thanks to the latest in technology at Premier Laser & Skin. So what skin tones can be treated with Laser Hair Removal?

The Fitzpatrick Scale for skin tone

In 1975, Thomas Fitzpatrick, then chairman of Harvard Medical School, developed a scale to estimate the response of various types of skin to UV light. Type one usually has light skin that always burns in the sun. Type two has fairly light skin, and almost never tans. Type three begins to darken a bit, but can tan when exposed to the sun. Type four is an olive colour, and tans routinely when exposed to the sun. Type five is dark in colour and rarely suffers sunburn. Type six is the darkest skin. They never burn, and tan fairly quickly.

Our newest laser hair removal treatment is specifically designed to successfully treat clients with skin types three through five on the Fitzpatrick scale.

Meet the Nd:Yag Laser

The laser devices used in hair removal are incredibly sensitive to both skin colour and melanin, which is why so many with darker skin were once turned away from the procedure. The Nd: YAG laser, though, can distinguish those subtle changes in skin tone, which means it can remove hair no matter what type of skin you might have. For you, this means safe, effective reduction in hair from top to toe.

STEP BY STEP PROCESS

Step 1

BOOK

Book your free consultation online. Free patch test included.

Step 2

AT THE CLINIC

Upon your initial consultation your practitioner will assess your skin and hair type to ensure you’re suitable for the treatment. They will discuss the packages available and then do a patch-test to ensure you are able to have the treatment.

Step 3

THE TREATMENT

48 hours after your patch test you are able to have your first treatment. After cleaning the skin the laser is passed over the skin. Many clients refer the sensation to feeling like an elastic band pinging against your skin.

Step 4

POST-TREATMENT/RESULTS

After your treatment your skin may feel a little sensitive and red. This is normal and should subside after 24 hours. We always recommend our clients to apply aloe vera gel following on from their Laser treatment to help soothe the skin and any irritation that may have been caused.
