Stellar M22 IPL for Leg Thread Veins

Stellar M22 IPL uses controlled pulses of light to reduce the appearance of suitable superficial blood vessels. The light is absorbed by haemoglobin in the blood and converted into heat, helping close the targeted vessels so they gradually become less visible.

Treatment aims to improve the appearance of selected fine thread veins. Results vary, and more than one appointment may be recommended.

Which Leg Veins Are Suitable?

IPL may be appropriate for fine, superficial red vessels. Suitability depends on their size, colour and depth, alongside your skin tone and medical history.

Larger blue veins, bulging varicose veins or veins associated with persistent swelling and discomfort need medical assessment. IPL does not treat underlying problems with blood flow.

What Happens During Treatment?

Your practitioner assesses the area, reviews your medical history and discusses recent sun exposure, medication and expected results. A patch test may be required.

During treatment, you wear protective eyewear while light pulses are applied to the selected area. You may feel warmth or a brief snapping sensation. Cooling helps with comfort.

What is Leg Spider Veins?

Similar to facial spider veins, leg spider veins derive their name from the web-like network of red or blue veins that often begin to spread across the legs with age. These veins are dilated superficial blood vessels, much like varicose veins, but they are smaller and situated closer to the skin’s surface. Leg spider veins are typically caused by increased pressure within the veins. While anyone can develop leg spider veins or varicose veins, treatment is available for anyone.

What causes Leg Spider Veins?

The problem is also more common in people with jobs that keep them stand for a long time on their feet, such as nurses and teachers. Other factors that may contribute include aging, obesity, pregnancy, prior trauma, or surgery to the leg and a genetic predisposition.

In addition to the appearance of patchwork of red and blue veins that you can see through the skin, people with spider veins may also experience swelling in the legs and a feeling of heaviness and tiredness in the legs.

Small spider veins usually appear as fine red, blue or purple lines beneath the skin, often forming branching clusters across the thighs, calves or ankles. They commonly cause no discomfort.

Larger leg veins may appear raised, twisted or bulging. Other symptoms can include:

• Aching, heaviness or discomfort in the legs.
• Swelling around the ankles or lower legs.
• Itching, dryness or changes in skin colour.
• Symptoms that become more noticeable after standing for long periods.

Larger, bulging veins may be varicose veins and should be assessed by a GP, particularly when accompanied by pain, swelling or skin changes. These are different from the fine surface thread veins that may be suitable for IPL.

Aftercare Following IPL

Follow the personalised instructions provided by your practitioner. Protect the treated area from sunlight, avoid tanning and avoid rubbing or picking the skin.

Your practitioner will explain when you can resume strenuous exercise, hot baths and other activities. Contact the clinic if you develop blistering, increasing pain or an unexpected reaction.
