Cover Your Tattoo Up With Makeup

Have You Fallen Out Of Love With Your Tattoo?

Chances are you love your tattoo; you might be proud of it and enjoy showing it off…it might just feel part of you. Equally you might not be as proud as you once were. Maybe it’s faded over time and the colours are not quite as vivid or pretty as they once were, or perhaps you’re no longer such a fan of fairies? Whatever the reason behind your desire to temporarily cover up your tattoo, you will be pleased to know that it’s not at all difficult. Anyone can learn the basic techniques involved in creating a clean canvass on your skin once more.

There are multiple products on the market designed specifically for covering tattoos and if you’re interested in investing in one of those, be sure to try the product out before you buy it. Some can be quite tricky to apply because they’re not the same as ordinary makeup. If however you’d like to use your usual makeup, it is possible to successfully cover a tattoo up for a special event such as a wedding or a job interview but remember not to use makeup on a new tattoo as you could ruin it or cause an infection. It can take up to 45 days for a tattoo to fully heal. If you’re not sure, check with a medical professional. If you’re ready to go then follow the tips below to learn how to cover up your tattoo like a pro!

  • Cleanse the area well: This might mean using a facial cleanser on your arms or wherever your tattoo is situated but don’t try to skip this step. You need to ensure that your skin has no dirt or grease present or the makeup won’t stick.
  • Apply a light shade of concealer: The concealer should be a heavy coverage one and not one designed for minor blemishes. You can use cream concealer or a panstick style…whichever is in your makeup bag but it should be several shades lighter than your natural skin tone. The best method of applying concealer is to use a brush or a sponge. With a “stippling” action, dab and dot the product all over the tattoo until it is covered or until only a little of it is showing through. Never try to rub it on with your fingers…all this does is slide the makeup around on your skin. You’re covering…so you need to create a layer of makeup which will stay put. Allow the product to dry on your skin for a minute or two.
  • Apply foundation: This layer should match your skin tone exactly. Again, use a brush or a sponge to dab the foundation on and don’t rub or spread. Make sure that the edges of the makeup are well blended into your skin so that there’s no visible makeup line. Allow the layer of makeup to dry.
  • Apply powder: Translucent powder will be the best option as it helps to prevent that over-made-up look which some heavy powders can create. Dust it onto your skin with a large brush and blow off the remaining loose powder.
  • Finish with hairspray: Hairspray is a great “fixer” and will help prevent your makeup from smearing onto clothing during your day.

If you’d like to try some other methods of tattoo cover-ups then do ask at your local beauty counter for some sample products. Be sure to practice your techniques before your big event and when your makeup is complete, check it in daylight to see that there are no ugly smears and also to ensure that the colour is perfectly matched to your natural skin tone. If you’re not sure, ask a friend to give it the once over for you.

Tattoos can be made completely invisible thanks to the excellent products now available to us…take advantage of them!
