The Christmas Superfood You Are Not Eating!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Super Sprouts

Research would seem to suggest that the humble and rather marvellous sprout is the most hated vegetable in the country. If you are a fan then what you love about sprouts is what most people hate; their firm, tightly packed leaves, their vibrant colour and their distinctive taste are all part of what makes them both magical and maligned and if you don’t eat them then you are missing out!

Sprouts are not only a “Christmas vegetable” they’re out in force and ready to eat quite early in the Autumn and not only are they cheap but they’re so packed full of the good stuff that you’d be crazy not to indulge.

  • Thiamin
  • Riboflavin
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorus and copper
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin K
  • Vitamin B6
  • Folate
  • Potassium
  • Manganese

Now that’s a pretty impressive list of nutritional capabilities and when you consider just how small a Brussels sprout is, it’s even more amazing. Brussels sprouts are known to lower cholesterol, protect against cancer and improve skin and muscle tone. What’s not to like?

If you’re really not a fan but want to take advantage of these amazing super vegetables, then take on board these tips for preparing sprouts to ensure they’re more palatable than perhaps you’re used to.

Don’t Overcook Them!

One of the most common complaints heard is that they’re “slimy” or “mushy” and that they smell bad. All of these “symptoms” indicate overcooking. If you ensure that your sprouts are properly prepared they won’t be slimy, mushy or smelly they will be perfect little globes of crunchy goodness which you should enjoy.

Cut them in half and steam them rather than boiling them whole or, if you prefer them whole then cut off the bottom section where the stalk once was, and cook gently in plain boiling water for no longer than 5 minutes.

Make A Gratin

Roast your sprouts whole in the oven and then add them to a delicious mixture of breadcrumbs, cheese sauce and bacon lardoons for a tasty alternative to plain sprouts.

Because sprouts are so packed with vitamins and minerals which will benefit you, there’s really no excuse for not squeezing them onto your menu! With Christmas around the corner they’re an expected part of the season’s proceedings…and they really are amazing when prepped properly so get on with it and don’t miss out on any more amazing Christmas nutrition!
