Cellulite Exposed – What Is Cellulite and How To Treat It

By Mary Basiadima, 7 February 2013

I am sure you have heard the saying ‘the camera doesn’t lie’ but just for once don’t you wish that it would, I mean it’s not too much to ask, right? After downloading the photos from your latest holiday getaway you are shaking with excitment at reliving the holiday experience through your TV. After flicking through what seems like over a million photos you find around 4 or 5 that you will upload to your Facebook page. “Why don’t you use that one darling…go back” your partner says as you are whizzing though trying to find some more hidden gems. He doesn’t realise the photos you have chosen have been selected for a reason – you look great on all of them…well at least from the waist up anyway.

Cellulite

Don’t worry you are not alone, chances are most of your women friends bikini photos online have had a little Photoshop magic touch up done to them. Them long thin perfectly smooth pins that you wish so desperately to obtain have been digitally enhanced. The thing is if you have cellulite you are in the majority – over 80% of females above the young age of 20 develop cellulite at some point during their lives. Although it is possible for men to get cellulite, about 95% occurs in women.

Cellulite is damaged fat and also the result of poor circulation and drainage. It can be caused by a multitude of things including hormonal changes, estrogen overproduction, inactive lifestyle, lack of physical exercise and excessive consumption of saturated fats and sugary food items. It can usually be found on the thighs, stomach or bum.

It’s All My Mothers Fault!!!

Ok, it’s time to debunk this common myth when surrounding cellulite. It’s probably true your mother can be blamed for a lot of things from giving you that dreaded bowl hair cut as a kid (seriously what was she thinking) to shrinking your favourite top in the wash, but when it comes to your ‘cottage cheese’ bumpy legs she is not at fault. Although it is true that some families are more prone and susceptible to cellulite, as long as you take good care of your body the less likely the chance you will develop it and the more likely you will be able to keep it under control.

I Have Cellulite So I Must Be Overweight

Again this is not true. I am sure you have heard of actress and model Jessica Alba? Or how about American socialite and television personality Kim Kardashian? Both have openly admitted to having cellulite with Kim quoted as saying “I have cellulite. So what! I’ve never claimed to be perfect. It’s crazy anyone should assume that just because you’re in the spotlight, you’re flawless”. These two beautiful women as I am sure you will agree are far from being classed as overweight.

The best way to avoid getting cellulite is to keep on top of your diet. Yo-yoing back and forth between weights only stretches the connective tissue in your skin and brings on cellulite more severely.

Just Like My Memory Cellulite Gets Worse With Age.

I am sorry to tell you that this is in fact true. As we age we are more likely to become slaves to our living room couch as we live less active lives. During this aging process we also tend to put on more weight and our skin thins breeding the perfect conditions for cellulite.

Exercise Is Cellulites Kryptonite

True!!! Although exercise will not get rid of cellulite it can certainly prevent or improve the appearance of cellulite affected skin. Working out improves our bodies’ circulation, removes excess fluid and most obviously tones up our muscles.

Go Commando!!!

Women’s tight underwear as sexy as it looks constricts the blood flow around the thighs and bum, accelerating cellulite development. Tight sexy underwear should be kept for those ‘special occasions’ – on a day to day basis try and wear some looser fitting underwear, or none at all!

Cutting Edge Cellulite Treatment…Only Without the Cutting

While some women decide to make peace with their cellulite the majority would rather get rid. There are quite a few varying treatments that are available however they mostly involve surgery. The London Premier Laser clinic offers a none invasive cellulite treatment in the form of Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT). AWT utilises sound waves that are applied via a handheld device and targets the cellulite affected area and rejuvenates the skin giving a smoother appearance. This treatment tightens the tissue, breaks down the fatty deposits and improves retention of fat cells in the subcutis.
